About us
ATMA is a digital library dedicated to early military literature (16th-17th centuries) developed to achieve two main objectives :
- To make available on a single platform all the texts belonging to this tradition (from a Thematic Research Collection perspective)
- To facilitate and stimulate the study of this same tradition with the development of tools adapted to the difficulties inherent in this type of text.
The first objective is based on the cataloging of the texts and their integration in IIIF format in a database managed by Omeka-S. Some of the texts have already been integrated, in particular the various texts already available in IIIF format on different platforms (Internet Archive, Gallica, E-rara, etc.). The integration of texts not yet available in this format or not digitized is therefore one of the next steps in this work.
The tools that we are trying to develop in parallel correspond to four different areas of work:
- First of all, a geographical dimension, the maps are used to reference the places of publication of the various treaties, but also the strongholds and battles mentioned in these texts. It would therefore be possible to access the texts via maps, but also to obtain maps for each text.
- The second aspect we are working on is the use of OCR (optical character recognition) to provide digital versions of texts. These allow an automated search for textual elements such as the battles mentioned above for example.
- A lexicographical tool has also been developed for technical terms specific to the art of war and fortification. A multilingual glossary containing the main terms of this lexicon is currently being developed.
- Finally, after the understanding of the text, it is the understanding of the images that is the last area of reflection. Three-dimensional models of the plans present in certain treatises are produced with the help of Cinema 4D, thus allowing a better visualization of the constructions presented.
