    Reconsidering Pausanias’ Possible Source for the Gallic Invasion of Greece (279/278 BC)
    [Résumé]

    Pausanias is one of the three literary sources (together with Diodorus and Justin) who describe the invasion of Greece by the Gauls in 279/278 BC. Scholars have attempted to identify his source for this episode, but without consensus. In this paper I will show that according to the literary style and political considerations in the passage, the historian Phylarchus emerges as a persuasive candidate as Pausanias’ source.

    Reconsidérer la source possible de Pausanias pour l’invasion gauloise de la Grèce (279/278 avant J.-C.)

    Résumé : Pausanias est l’une des trois sources littéraires (avec Diodore et Justin) qui décrivent l’invasion de la Grèce par les Gaulois en 279/278 avant Jésus-Christ. Les chercheurs ont tenté d’identifier sa source pour cet épisode, mais sans consensus. Dans cet article, je montrerai que, selon le style littéraire et les considérations politiques du passage, l’historien Phylarchus apparaît comme un candidat convaincant comme source de Pausanias.

    Resumen: Pausanias es una de las tres fuentes literarias (junto con Diodoro y Justino) que describen la invasión de Grecia por los galos en 279/278 a.C. Los investigadores han intentado identificar su fuente para este episodio, pero sin llegar a un consenso. En este artículo mostraré que, de acuerdo con el estilo literario y las consideraciones políticas de la cita, el historiador Filarco emerge como un candidato persuasivo como fuente posible de Pausanias.

    La philosophie de l’histoire de Vico dans un tableau de Jean Gigoux (1837-1838)
    [Résumé]

    L’article aborde plusieurs thématiques de l’histoire sociale de l’art dans la première moitié du XIXe siècle en France à travers l’analyse d’un tableau peu connu de Jean Gigoux sur Cléopâtre : la réception de l’Antiquité gréco-romaine et égyptienne (grâce aussi au voyage du peintre en Italie), la peinture d’histoire et la philosophie de l’histoire de Giambattista Vico. La grande toile (disparue) Antoine et Cléopâtre après la bataille d’Actium essayant des poisons sur des esclaves (1837-1838) est analysée comme mise en application picturale des théories de Vico dans La Scienza Nuova et comme exaltation des racines gauloises de la civilisation française.

    Vico’s Philosophy of History in a Painting by Jean Gigoux (1837-1838)

    Abstract: The article addresses several themes of the social history of art in the first half of the 19th century in France through the analysis of a little-known painting of Jean Gigoux on Cleopatra: the reception of Greco-Roman and Egyptian antiquity (also thanks to the painter’s trip to Italy), history painting and Giambattista Vico’s philosophy of history. The (disappeared) canvas Anthony and Cleopatra after the battle of Actium trying poisons on slaves (1837-1838) is analyzed as a pictorial application of Vico’s theories in La Scienza Nuova and as an exaltation of the Gallic roots of French civilization.

    La filosofía de la historia de Vico en un cuadro de Jean Gigoux (1837-1838)

    Resumen: El artículo aborda varios temas de la historia social del arte de la primera mitad del siglo XIX en Francia a través del análisis de un cuadro poco conocido de Jean Gigoux sobre Cleopatra: la recepción de la antigüedad grecorromana y egipcia (también gracias al viaje del pintor a Italia), la pintura de historia y la filosofía de la historia de Giambattista Vico. El lienzo (desaparecido) Antonio y Cleopatra tras la batalla de Accio probando venenos con esclavos (1837-1838) se analiza como aplicación pictórica de las teorías de Vico en La Scienza Nuova y como exaltación de las raíces galas de la civilización francesa.

    Deux inscriptions honorifiques de Cnide apportent de nouvelles lumières sur la “dynastie” de producteurs d’amphores rhodiens et cnidiens du IIe siècle avant J.-C. de Damokratès I, Hippokratès, Aristoklès II et Timoxénos, et montrent l’insertion de cette dynastie au sein des élites cnidiennes.

    A Family Business: Producing Amphorae in Rhodes and Knidus in the 2nd century BC

    Abstract: Two honorific inscriptions from Cnidus bring new light on the Rhodian-Knidian “dynasty” of amphorae fabricants of the 2nd century BC of Damokrates I, Hippokrates, Aristokles II and Timoxenos and show the integration of this dynasty in the Knidian elite.

    Septime Sévère conseruator orbis à Lepcis Magna et à Avenches
    [Résumé]

    Deux inscriptions, de Lepcis magna et d’Avenches, attribuent à Septime Sévère le titre de conseruator orbis. Elles sont immédiatement postérieures à la bataille de Lyon (197) qui lui donna la mainmise définitive sur l’empire. Ces documents ouvrent des perspectives sur la perception des grands événements durant la guerre civile, et sur la construction de l’image de Septime Sévère dans les années de conquête du pouvoir.

    Abstract: Two inscriptions, from Lepcis magna and Avenches, attribute to Septimius Severus the title of conseruator orbis. They date back to immediately after the battle of Lyons (197), which gave him definitive control over the empire. These documents open up perspectives on the perception of major events during the civil war, and on the construction of Septimius Severus’ image in the years of his conquest of power.

    Appel à la conversion et controverses religieuses dans les écrits des auteurs chrétiens d’Afrique à l’aube du tournant constantinien
    [Résumé]

    Chez les auteurs chrétiens du iiie et début ive siècle, la critique des pratiques païennes tient une place très importante. Ces attaques sont, en effet, si abondantes que l’on ne peut manquer de s’interroger sur les raisons de cette profusion. Ce thème apparaît ainsi comme une composante organique des œuvres des auteurs chrétiens d’Afrique à l’aube de la paix constantinienne. Ces auteurs avaient construit leur appareil argumentatif à partir d’une observation minutieuse de la réalité socio-culturelle de leur société. Leurs écrits sont donc un élément fondamental pour comprendre le début de la construction d’une mouvance antipaïenne à l’intérieur de la société africaine de l’époque romaine tardive.

    Call to Conversion and Religious Controversy in the Writings of African Christian Authors at the Dawn of the Constantinian Turn

    Abstract: Among the Christian authors of the third and early fourth centuries, criticism of pagan practices is very important. These attacks are, in fact, so abundant that one cannot fail to wonder about the reasons for this profusion. This theme thus appears as an organic component of the works of African Christian authors at the dawn of the Constantinian peace. These authors had built their argumentative apparatus from a meticulous observation of the socio-cultural reality of their society. Their writings are therefore a fundamental element for understanding the beginning of the construction of an anti-pagan movement within African society of the Later Roman period.

    Llamada a la conversión y controversia religiosa en los escritos de autores cristianos africanos en los albores del giro constantiniano

    Resumen: Entre los autores cristianos del siglo III y principios del siglo IV, la crítica a las prácticas paganas es muy importante. De hecho, estos ataques son tan abundantes que uno no puede dejar de preguntarse por las razones de esta profusión. Así pues, este tema aparece como un componente orgánico de las obras de los autores cristianos africanos en los albores de la paz constantiniana. Estos autores han construido su aparato argumentativo a partir de una observación minuciosa de la realidad sociocultural de su sociedad. Sus escritos son, por tanto, un elemento fundamental para entender el inicio de la construcción de un movimiento contra los paganos en el seno de la sociedad africana del Bajo Imperio romano.

    Fiscalité : revue de littérature juridique à l’usage de l’histoire ancienne
    [Résumé]

    Alors que la fiscalité devient de plus en plus un objet d’enquête en histoire ancienne, il s’avère que sa technicité constitue un frein aux débats. À l’aide d’une recherche menée dans les travaux de juristes, de fiscalistes et de psychologues de l’impôt, le projet est ici de proposer un aperçu des complexités que rencontrent les chercheurs dans ces disciplines à définir ce qu’est l’impôt dans la langue française. Les définitions souvent retenues sont inopérantes quand elles sont appliquées à l’histoire ancienne. Un glossaire final propose des réflexions pour enrichir les travaux menés sur la fiscalité antique.

    Taxation: a Juridical Inquiry for Historians

    Abstract: While being currently a matter of numerous inquiries in ancient history, taxation is complicated to define because of its technicality. With the help of works produced in the areas of French fiscal law and social psychology, the aim of this paper is to demonstrate the inadequacy of the often used definitions in the French language when applied to ancient history. A final glossary proposes some reflections in order to fuel the researches concerning ancient taxation.

    Fiscalidad: una investigación jurídica para historiadores dedicados a la antigüedad

    Resumen: Aunque actualmente es objeto de numerosas indagaciones en la historia antigua, la fiscalidad es complicada de definir debido a su tecnicismo. Con la ayuda de trabajos realizados en los ámbitos del derecho fiscal francés y de la psicología social, el objetivo de este trabajo es demostrar la inadecuación de las definiciones a menudo utilizadas en lengua francesa cuando se aplican a la historia antigua. Un glosario final propone algunas reflexiones con el fin de alimentar las investigaciones relativas a la fiscalidad antigua.
