Sous le titre « Lo viejo y lo nuevo en las sociedades antiguas: homenaje a Alberto Prieto », a eu lieu à l’université autonome de Barcelone (12 et 13 décembre 2013) le XXXVIe colloque international du Groupe de Recherche sur l’Esclavage dans l’Antiquité (GIREA). La rencontre, de plus de 40 chercheurs de cinq pays différents, a été organisée en six sessions thématiques :

Auteur : Domingo PLÁCIDO SUAREZLa libertad en sociedades esclavistas y no esclavistas. Vieja y nueva libertad[Résumé]El presente trabajo es un estudio de la libertad y su evolución histórica. Partiendo de la dicotomía eleuthería/douleía en la Grecia clásica, nuestro análisis profundiza en la transformación e interpretación historiográfica de la libertad desde la antigüedad hasta nuestros días. Concluimos que libertad antigua era una idea contraria a la esclavitud (libertad frente a la explotación); mientras la libertad actual propone el acceso libre a la explotación o de dejar sin trabajo al proletariado. Auteur : José PASCUALAcarnania de 330 a 230 a.C.: entre el federalismo y la dependencia[Résumé]Este trabajo se centra en las vicisitudes históricas por las que atravesó una pequeña región griega, la Acarnania, desde finales del período clásico y a lo largo del siglo III a.C. De este modo, mediante el estudio del famoso tratado etolio-acarnanio de alianza e isopoliteia, del reparto de la región entre el reino del Epiro y la confederación etolia y de la posterior liberación del dominio epirota, se indaga en las diversas formas de dominación a las que se vio sometida la región, para concluir que, mención hecha de las alianzas asimétricas, la isopoliteia o el intercambio de ciudadanía, y la incorporación de una etnia o territorios de la misma a otra confederación, distinta de su comunidad originaria, puede no ser, en ocasiones, muestra de aperturismo de las estructuras estatales griegas, sino un instrumento de dominación y dependencia. Auteur : Fernando ECHEVERRÍA REYViejas y nuevas armas en la Grecia clásica. Aspectos de un debate tecnológico y cultural[Résumé]El desarrollo armamentístico en la antigua Grecia se suele abordar desde una perspectiva determinista como una secuencia de transformaciones rápidas y revolucionarias: el arma tiene un impacto directo en la guerra y en la sociedad griegas, y se defiende la idea de “revolución”. La alternativa a esta visión es la idea de que los cambios tecnológicos son lentos y graduales en el Mundo Antiguo, y se prefiere el concepto de “evolución”. La idea de “adaptación” es crucial en esta segunda perspectiva, no sólo en el plano tecnológico, sino también en el psicológico aplicado a las actitudes y reacciones ante la tecnología militar. Si la innovación suponía normalmente para los griegos una mirada al pasado como permanente fuente de inspiración, ello implicaba en la práctica una tensión constante entre innovación y conservadurismo, con la posibilidad de rechazar, por un lado, o adaptar, por otro, cualquier innovación tecnológica. Auteur : Borja ANTELA-BERNÁRDEZÉlites viejas y nuevas en Atenas en el preludio de las Guerras Mitridáticas[Résumé]El dominio romano sobre Grecia favoreció intensamente la posición comercial de Atenas por medio de la cesión del control sobre el puerto de Delos, donde se centraba buena parte del mercado de esclavos del mediterráneo oriental. Los beneficios de este tráfico de esclavos produjo dos grupos bien diferenciados en el panorama social ateniense, uno más tradicional que contaba con el soporte de Roma, y otro, de atenienses recientes, que buscaron vincularse con Mitrídates Eupator con el objetivo de eliminar el monopolio político de sus rivales. Old and New Weapons in Classical Greece: Reflections on a Technological and Cultural Debate[Résumé]The question of the transformation of military technology in ancient Greece is commonly addressed from a deterministic perspective and presented as a chain of quick and revolutionary changes: weapons are assumed to play a crucial role in Greek warfare and society, favouring the idea of “revolution”. Alternatively, technological change in the Ancient World can be claimed to be slow and gradual, emphasizing the idea of “evolution.” Adaptation is a key concept in this second approach, not only on the technological but also on the psychological level, implying various attitudes and responses to military technology. Innovation commonly entailed for ancient Greeks a look to the past as a permanent source of inspiration, which, in practice, resulted in a clash between innovation and conservatism, and the possibility either to reject or to adapt any technological development. Auteur : Miriam VALDÉS GUÍADe los ptochoi homéricos a los del siglo IV: lo viejo y lo nuevo, mendicidad y evergesía[Résumé]En este artículo nos detenemos en la figura de los mendigos (ptochoi) desde Homero hasta el siglo IV. En la Odisea son lo último de la sociedad, considerados como thetes potenciales “en paro”, pero además caracterizados como “gorrones”. El demos de Atenas se aleja de esta caracterización al menos en el siglo V pero se presenta (al menos una parte), como ptochos en la comedia en el siglo IV, época en la que la imagen de los parásitos resulta significativa en un ambiente en el que la pobreza amenaza al demos con menos recursos, que revive situaciones de dependencia y de marginación, similares a las de los mendigos, aunque aún está protegido por la ciudadanía. Old and New Athenian Elites in the Prelude to the Mithridatic Wars[Résumé]The Roman rule over Greece intensely benefited the commercial position of Athens with the cession of the control of the port of Delos, where the most part of the slave trade along the Eastern Mediterranean was centered. The profits of this trafficking of slaves produced two very well differentiated groups in Athenian society: one more traditional that relies on the support of Rome, and another, made up of some kind of new Athenians, that looked for links with Mithridates Eupator in order to eliminate their rivals’ monopoly on Athenian politics. From Homeric Ptochoi to those of the 4th Century: Old and New, Begging and Charity[Résumé]In this paper the character of the beggar (ptochos) is examined from Homer’s time to the 4th century B.C. In the Odyssey, the ptochoi represent the worst part of society: they are considered as thetes and potential “unemployed” people, and they are also described as “parasites.” The Athenian dèmos gradually abandoned this conception, in the 5th century B.C. at least, but another period of time comes when the image of the “parasite” (or perhaps a part of this image, as for the ptochos in 4th-century comedies) reappears with some significance in an environment where poverty is a threat to the less wealthy dèmos. These people experienced situations of dependency and marginalization again, similar to what beggars experienced, even though society still protected them. In posizione privilegiata è sicuramente la recente edizione critica di tabulae ceratae provenienti da Pompei ed Ercolano curate da G. Camodeca. Le tavolette pompeiane, in particolare, costituiscono l’ archivio di ex schiavi, i ricchi liberti Caii Sulpicii, uomini d’ affari e banchieri, legati alla grande casata patrizia dei Sulpicii Galbae. La lettura di questi testi ha permesso di ricostruire il formulario di numerosi atti e negozi, che le fonti giuridiche lasciavano intendere, tra cui il mutuo che viene in rilievo nell’ esame di TPSulp. 78, chirografo bilingue, caratterizzato dalla coesistenza di elementi propri del diritto romano e del diritto greco-ellenistico, idonei a consentire la tutela giurisdizionale dei contraenti in ciascun ordinamento, in considerazione del fatto che con riferimento al tipo contrattuale del mutuo, come è noto, le prassi giuridiche divergono. Philosophical Breach or Philosophy for Times of Crisis? Stoicism, City, and Slavery[Résumé]The purpose of this reflection is to examine the role attributed in modern criticism to Roman stoicism about the supposed or real changes in the relationship of the free to slavery and slaves. By following the different stages of the formation of Roman Stoicism, one can actually grasp concrete legal and moral developments in the taking into account of slavery as a social rather than a natural fact. From this postulate will result pragmatic approaches which, while leading to a humanization of the slaves, do not condemn the institution of slavery itself. Sin embargo, como suele ocurrir en el caso de los grandes personajes históricos, el hecho de vivir a la sombra de las hazañas de su hijo ha supuesto que la historiografía trate la figura de Olimpia sólo en relación con él. A menudo no se ha tenido en cuenta el papel político y estratégico que la epirota jugó dentro de la conrte Macedonia durante la infancia, adolescencia y sobre todo ausencia de Alejandro, así como tras la muerte de éste. En este artículo nuestra intención es ver la evolución de la historiografia relativa a Olimpia del Epiro y de la imagen que de ella nos ha llegado desde las fuentes antiguas hasta los más recientes estudios alrededor de su figura. On the Integration Process of Pontus in the Roman Empire: Old Theories and New Perspectives on the Pompeian Territorial Organization[Résumé]This article analyses how Rome definitively integrated the territories of the former kingdoms of Bithynia and Pontus after the Mithridatic wars. The architect was Pompey the Great, the acclaimed conqueror of Mithridates VI Eupator, king of Pontus, who was forced to organize new centers of control and tax collection. To achieve his goal, Pompey urged forced resettlements of local populations, which implied large-scale works and territorial transformations. Freedom in Slave and Non-Slave Societies: Old and New Freedom[Résumé]The aim of this paper is to analyze the concept of freedom and its historical evolution. The study goes deeply into the historiographical transformation and interpretation of freedom from antiquity to the present day, starting from the eleutheria/douleia dichotomy. It concludes that in antiquity freedom was conceived as the opposite of slavery (freedom as opposed to exploitation), whereas modern freedom proposes free access to exploitation, leaving the working class jobless. Continuity and Change during the Process of Roman Domination in Western Hispania[Résumé]This paper proposes an approach to continuity and change during the process of integration of Western territories in the Roman dominion during the Principate. Augustus’s imperial conception implied important changes in the provincial organization, also rooted in the republican tradition, visible in Egypt, the Alps, and Northwestern Iberia. In this latter case, the process of change has been interpreted as a result of persisting trends and atavisms in a non-romanized context. However, the archaeological and epigraphic record exhibits clear indicators of deep changes in the structure of society since the conquest. Acarnania from 330 B.C. to 230 B.C.: Between Federalism and Dependency[Résumé]This paper focuses on the historical vicissitudes that a small Greek region, Acarnania, went through during the last part of the classical period and throughout the third century B.C. Therefore, analysing the famous treaty of the Aetolian-Acarnanian alliance and exchange of citizenship (isopoliteia), the sharing out of the region between Epirus and the Aetolian Confederacy, and its subsequent liberation from Epirote control, the different ways of domination to which the area was submitted are scrutinized, leading to the conclusion that, considering the asymmetric alliances, the isopoliteia and the incorporation of an ethnic group or its territories into another confederacy other than that of its original community, sometimes does not prove the openness of the Greek state structures and, on the contrary, was an instrument of control and dependency. Peregrini and Legal Practice in Roman Law in Campania: about TPSulp. 78[Résumé]The value of collections of documents grounded in practice is well known. These primary sources are little used, by legal historians in their reconstruction of legal phenomena owing to difficulties of interpretation and the high quantity of “informational complexity” presented by this type of text, even though they constitute precious sources and firsthand testimonies of the law as it was concretely applied in everyday affairs. A privileged position is certainly occupied by the recent critical edition by G. Camodeca of the tabulae ceratae from Pompeii and Herculaneum. The Pompeian tablets, in particular, consist of the archive of ex slaves, the rich freedmen Caii Sulpicci, businessmen and bankers, with ties to the major patrician house of the Sulpicii Galbae. The study of these texts has made it posible to reconstitute the way numerous legal acts and tractations were drawn, as suggested by the legal sources, among which the loan that comes up in the examination of TPSulp. 78, a bilingual document, characterized by the coexistence of elements specific to Roman law and Greek-Hellenistic law, allowing for the legal protection of both parties, considering that in the case of contracts such as loans, practices notoriously differ. If we talk about the Macedonian king Alexander the Great, this woman was his mother, Olympias. However, she lived in the shadow of her son, and the historiography has not given her the attention she deserves. Cambios y continuidades a lo largo del siglo I d.C.[Résumé]Tras la conquista del Noroeste peninsular en época de Augusto, Roma llevó a cabo una profunda reorganización territorial, basada en la completa disolución de las estructuras prerromanas y en la creación de un sistema de civitates peregrinas sometidas al pago de tributo. El paso siguiente lo localizamos en el período flavio, momento en el que detectamos una serie de cambios en el registro que se concretan en una reorganización territorial, marcada por el auge de algunos núcleos y la aparición de nuevos ejes de articulación del poblamiento en las principales zonas mineras. A esto se suma la visibilidad epigráfica de ciertas familias que se configuran como grupos de poder, alcanzando el ámbito provincial a lo largo del siglo II d.C. Los cambios regionales que constatamos en este período, apuntan hacia una reforma fiscal y tributaria llevada a cabo por los Flavios y que ha dejado testimonio en otros puntos del Imperio. Pero, a diferencia de lo que ocurrió tras la conquista del Noroeste, las intervenciones de los Flavios no supusieron una ruptura respecto al momento anterior, sino que actualizaron e impulsaron el proceso de inclusión en el Imperio que ya se había iniciado con Augusto. The Impact of Flavian Reforms in the Mining Areas of the Northwest of the Iberian Peninsula: Changes and Continuities throughout the First Century AD[Résumé]After the conquest of the Northwest of the Iberian Peninsula during the time of Augustus, Rome carried out a critical territorial reorganization, which was based on the complete dissolution of pre-Roman social structures and on the creation of a tributary civitates peregrinae system. The next step of the process occurred under the Flavians, when epigraphic records reveal a series of changes. These indicate a new territorial reorganization with the rise of some population centres and the emergence of new axes of settlement crossing major mining areas. Furthermore, the emergence of certain families that belong to provincial power groups during the second century AD can be traced through their epigraphic visibility. Regional changes that we see in this period suggest the possibility that there were fiscal and tax reforms carried out by the Flavians. These reforms have left evidence elsewhere in the Roman Empire. However, unlike what happened under Augustus, Flavian interventions did not lead to a break from the previous period. These reforms served to update and promote the inclusion process in the Roman Empire, which had been started after the conquest. En esta obra se ha conservado una descripción de la división provincial de la Hispania tardoantigua (Discriptio Hispaniae) focalizada en la Carthaginiensis, que el autor basó en diversas fuentes inéditas de época antigua, tanto de época imperial como bizantina. La mención en el texto a diversas fases de actividad agrimensoria, con precisas descripciones de trabajos de delimitación territorial, permite proponer la existencia de una documentación provincial gromática, hasta el momento desconocida, de gran interés histórico. A su vez, el documento ofrece nueva información sobre la presencia bizantina en Spania y los posibles límites territoriales de su ocupación. Old and New Territorial Dependencies: New Data about the Ager per extremitatem mensura comprehensus in the Ars Gromatica Gisemundi[Résumé]The recent edition of the Ars Gromatica siue Geometria Gisemundi, which is based on two manuscripts that date from the ninth century (mostly ACA Ripoll 106), has offered new data about the literature of the Roman land surveyors. The work includes a description of the division of Spain’ s provinces in late Roman times (Discriptio Hispaniae), especially focused on the Carthaginensis region. The author based his text on several unpublished ancient sources dating from the early empire to the byzantine period. The text mentions some land surveying activities and describes some specific works in order to delimitate territories that allow us to propose the existence of a type of provincial land surveying documentation that has remained unknown until now. In addition, the document provides new information about the Byzantine presence in Spania and the possible boundaries of their occupation. The Old and the New in the Representation of Dependence in Authors of Late Antiquity: Symmachus and Augustine of Hippo[Résumé]Based on an analysis of the collected letters of the noble Roam Symmachus and the African Bishop Augustine of Hippo, this contribution discusses similarities and differences within relations of dependence. In both authors, lines of continuity can be noted, as well as occasional breaks in these lines, with regard to the different forms of dependence: slavery or the colonate system. This approach leads me to reflect on the role of Christianity in the continuity or transformation of the modes of representation of inferior social groups; in short, it serves to increase our knowledge of Christian discourse about social relations, a discourse, with its own nuances, that continues to affect the conceptualization of classical culture. Nuestro estudio se articula en torno a dos objetivos de alcance diferente: en primer lugar, la conceptualización de la naturaleza de la relación entre romanos y bárbaros y sus influencias recíprocas en el Barbaricum oriental; en segundo lugar, la investigación de la explotación de la sal en el área del occidente de Polonia, a través de la que se pueden documentar y analizar numerosas evidencias de esa interacción. Argumentaremos que desde finales del siglo I a.C. existen numerosas evidencias de que los contactos entre Roma y los pueblos indígenas situados al este del limes conllevaron profundos cambios e influencias recíprocas. The Empire beyond the limes: Permanence and Change in the Barbaricum between the 1st and 4th centuries AD[Résumé]This paper presents the first results of a research focused on the study of contacts between Rome and the Barbaricum in Central Europe between the 1st and 4th centuries AD. Our study is articulated around two different objectives: first, the conceptualization of the nature of the relationship between Romans and barbarians and their reciprocal influences on the Eastern Barbaricum; second, the investigation of salt mining in the area of western Poland, through which it is possible to document and analyze the abundant evidence of that interaction. It will be argued that since the end of the 1st century B.C., there is abundant evidence that contacts between Rome and indigenous communities of the Eastern part of the limes entailed profound changes and reciprocal influences. All’interno di questo universo tribale esistevano stratificazioni sociali entro la stessa categoria degli uomini liberi e forme di dipendenza, quali la schiavitù, attestate dai corpora tardoantichi e altomedievali noti come Leges barbarorum. Nell’ambito di tali forme di dipendenza l’ indagine si propone di verificare eventuali processi acculturativi innescatisi a seguito dell’ incontro osmotico e conflittuale tra i “popoli” barbari e la romanitas, unitamente all’ incidenza socio-economica che è possibile riconoscere a schiavi e uomini liberi di status sociale inferiore entro le istituzioni della comunità tribale. Forms of Dependence in the Barbarian Societies of the Western Europe in Late Antiquity: Economic impact and Social structures[Résumé]The vast and varied world that the Romans called indifferently barbaricum was structured in traditional societies, that modern sociology calls “complex tribal organizations”, or federations of tribes, in which it is now difficult to recognize the cultural homogeneity that was erroneously supposed in the past. Within this tribal universe there existed the same kinds of social stratifications among free men as well as forms of dependence, such as slavery, attested by the late ancient and early medieval corpora known as Leges barbarorum. In the context of these forms of dependence this paper proposes to verify cultural processes that originated after the osmotic encounter and conflict between Barbarian “peoples” and the romanitas, together with socio-economic effects that can traced among slaves and free men of lower social status within the institutions of the tribal community. Inquilini sive servi in the Fifth Century AD[Résumé]The aim of this paper is to try and define the role and conditio of inquilini in the complex world of the agrarian dependence in the Spätantike. It will be argued that only through the analysis of realia can the wide range of relationships, sometimes rigid and schematically formalized in their legal codification, be fully understood. More precisely, this paper focuses on the following documents: papyrus Tjäder 10-11, containing the registration of Odovacar’s donation of some fundi located in Sicily to his own comes domesticorum Pierius, where the workforce was made up of inquilini sive servi; and a document, known as the Charta Cornutiana, recording the donation of a church outside Tivoli in 471 AD, by Flavius Valila, a barbarian general, vir clarissimus inlustris comes et magister utriusque militiae. Observaremos las líneas de continuidad y de ruptura, si las hubiera, de ambos autores en torno a las distintas formas de dependencia, bien sea la esclavitud o bien el sistema de colonato. Tal planteamiento nos lleva a reflexionar sobre el papel del cristianismo en la continuidad o transformación de las formas de representación de los grupos inferiores, y en definitiva servirá para conocer mejor el discurso cristiano sobre las relaciones sociales. Assyriology and Nazism: Wolfram von Soden’s Work[Résumé]In recent years, monographic studies on the relationship between Nazism and Ancient Orientalism have multiplied, especially in disciplines such as Egyptology and Biblical Studies. By contrast, Assyriology, at least until now, has been left out of this trend. This paper analyses a paradigmatic example of the close ties between Assyriology and Nazism. Through this example we will show the deep influence of this ideology on Wolfram von Soden’s work and his writing of the history of Ancient Mesopotamia. Appropriations of Sparta in National Socialism: The Racial State[Résumé]The appropriation by German National Socialism of a particular image of Sparta is largely responsible for the fact that in the present day the ancient Greek polis of Lacedaemon is often described as a totalitarian, militaristic, and even genocidal state. Imágenes nuevas de viejas prácticas femeninas[Résumé]En este texto analizo la imagen de la conspiradora a partir de las biografías de matronas notables de la Roma del siglo I a.C. Se trata de personajes femeninos involucrados en los acontecimientos significativos que marcan la crisis final de la Republica y parecen irrumpir en los espacios políticos de una forma desconocida hasta entonces en la sociedad romana. Pero su influencia política fue limitada y, en el fondo, al servicio de los intereses de sus parientes masculinos, lo que no rompía con la tradición. Sin duda, las matronas conspiradoras fueron criticadas por entrometerse en asuntos de la res publica y por sobrepasar los límites de su condición femenina; pero aún más por apoyar el ideario de los líderes masculinos derrotados en las batallas políticas. Así ocurrió con Sempronia, Servilia o Fulvia, entre otras, aunque contemos con el caso excepcional de Porcia. Women and Political Action in the Late Republic: The Conspirators. New Images of Old Female Practices[Résumé]In this paper I analyse the image of the female conspirator using biographies about prominent matrons in 1st century B.C. Rome. These were female figures who were involved in the most relevant events that determined the final crisis of the Republic, for they seem to irrupt in the political area in a way previously unknown to Roman society. However, their political influence was limited and, in fact, it was subordinated to their male relatives’ interests, so they did not break with tradition. Without a doubt, matron conspirators were criticized for their intrusion in the res publica, as they did so by exceeding the limits of their female condition; but even more because they supported the ideological agenda of the male leaders defeated in the political struggles. This is what happened with Sempronia, Servilia or Fulvia, among others, although we have the exceptional case of Porcia. Estas “voces antirromanas” influyen en la historiografía moderna para caracterizar a unos antepasados indígenas idealizados y una Roma invasora y cruel. Así ocurrió también en la historiografía y literatura vasca del siglo XIX, que readapta el viejo discurso de la historiografía antigua al servicio de los nuevos intereses políticos de la época. Auteur : Maria CRUZ CARDETE DEL OLMOEl postcolonialismo y los procesos coloniales: controversias y posibilidades de análisis[Résumé]Los estudios postcoloniales han ofrecido nuevos métodos y técnicas y, sobre todo, una forma muy distinta de análisis de las relaciones de poder marcadas por los procesos coloniales. No obstante, su adaptación desde el escenario moderno al mundo antiguo (concretamente al griego) no ha sido ni sencilla ni homogénea. Problemas terminológicos, preocupaciones teóricas, discrepancias conceptuales y enfrentamientos políticos marcadamente dialécticos han contribuido a complejizar (y con ello a enriquecer) el panorama de la conquista griega en el Mediterráneo. Este artículo pretende señalar algunos de los aspectos más polémicos de esa adaptación, al tiempo que ofrece algunas reflexiones y posibilidades de análisis.

Postcolonialism and Colonial Processes: Controversies and Possibilities of Analysis[Résumé]Postcolonial studies have offered new methods and techniques and, above all, a very different way of analyzing the power relationships of colonial processes. However, adaptation from the modern context to the Ancient world (specifically the Ancient Greek World) has not been neither plain nor homogeneous. Terminological problems, theoretical questions, conceptual differences, and highly dialectical political confrontations have contributed to making Greek colonialism in the Mediterranean more complex and richer. This article tries to show some very polemical aspects of this adaptation and to offer some reflections and possibilities of study. Quelques réflexions[Résumé]Depuis plusieurs années, des recherches s’efforcent de renouveler les méthodes de l’analyse historique. Les héritages sont donc souvent interrogés voire contestés. À partir d’exemples, l’ auteur revient sur certaines notions clés comme celles de concept et de modèle mais aussi sur des problèmes anciens longtemps abandonnés et aujourd’hui revisités. C’est ainsi, par exemple, que la remise en cause des séquences historiques traditionnelles, les travaux des archéologues et les études du paysage réactualisent la notion ancienne de « passage » entre les sociétés de l’Antiquité et celles du haut Moyen-Âge occidental. Au-delà de certaines querelles parfois assez vaines, l’auteur se demande si le fait essentiel n’ est pas l’établissement de rapports nouveaux entre logique inductive et logique déductive. Free Peoples and Enslaved Peoples in the Basque Historiography and Literature in the 19th Century[Résumé]The point of view of Greek and Roman historians from imperial times is generally favourable to Roman imperialism. But more critical views can also be found, through the idealization of the barbarians or through the “voices” of the enemies of Rome. These “anti-Roman voices” have greatly influenced modern historiography for the idealization of native peoples and the rejection of a conquering and cruel Rome. This happened also in the Basque Country in the nineteenth century, when historiographical and literary works readapted the ancient discourse to the new political interests and debates. The “Crisis of History”: False Questions and Real Problems. Some Reflections[Résumé]For several years, research has been trying to renew the methods of historical analysis. The inherited methods are often questioned and even controversial. In the examples that are given here, the author reconsiders some important notions such as those of concept and model but also long abandoned old problems that are today revisited. Thus, for example, the questioning of traditional historical periodization, archeological work, and the studies of landscape bring up to date again the notion of “transition” between the societies of antiquity and those of the early Western Middle Ages. Beyond rather idle disputes, the author wonders whether what is at stake is not the establishment of new connections between inductive logic and deductive logic.
